What is Electric Star Pubs?
Electric Star Pubs is a small independent pub company which operates pubs primarily in East and North London. The company was founded in December 2007 when founder Rob Star purchased a failing gig venue in Bethnal Green called ‘The Pleasure Unit’ and turned it into a modern pub venue called 'The Star of Bethnal Green’. Rob had been throwing warehouse parties in East London since the early 2000’s and was keen to create his own venue showcasing cutting edge music, interesting food and great drinks. It wasn’t plain sailing from the start though, when they launched in 2008, the recession had just hit, their funding was slashed and they didn’t have enough money to finish the project. This meant the pub was only half finished when it opened and could quite easily have failed in its first year. Fortunately Robs promotional skills and contacts in the music business meant that the pub quickly became a go to place for upcoming bands and DJ’s, with early live gigs from Metronomy and Laura Marling alongside DJ sets from the likes of Skream, Nathan Fake and Danny Howells.
As soon as the venue started to make some money and stand on its own to feet they looked to expand, taking on a site in one of the most run-down areas of Zone 1, Kings Cross. This was in 2010 and prior to the Kings Cross development - many questioned the move to a site that needed a sizeable investment and was basically in the middle of nowhere. The pub lost money for the first 2 years, but it’s now right on the edge of the biggest urban re-development in Europe and is the companys busiest pub. Further openings followed in Hackney (Star by Hackney Downs and The Jackdaw and Star), followed by Leyton (The Leyton Star).
The company prides itself on opening venues in locations that are on the up, taking over neglected sites and transforming them into quirky establishments that are unique but have the same ethos of serving great food and amazing drinks, with a backdrop of cutting edge DJ’s at the weekend. Taking time to create an environment where you are equally as comfortable celebrating your birthday, dancing with your mates or just having dinner with your partner.
They are constantly on the look out for potential new sites in London that are a good size with a function room and outdoor space for the summer.
